WEEK 6
Wednesday Evening Tourney
Lyle Johnson
“Last Cast”

:In my fishing experiences over 50 years the terms “one more cast”, “this is my last cast” or “let me lose this last bait” and many others have been uttered literally thousands of times. A good percentage of the time, you catch a fish or get a bite and it makes you fish a little longer.
During a bass tournament it usually happens a little different. The time element is the big factor for you try to extend your fishing time as long as possible to get the most casts possible. If you have a limit or good enough weight, you might leave a little early to make sure you get back in time. If you don’t have much, stretching it out becomes the game.
Lance Little and Brad Duplessis had such a decision. With time running out and one bass in the live-well that weighed just over a pound, they were stretching it out like any tournament angler worth their salt would do.
Then came the call for the “last cast”. Brad’s bait made its normal entry into the water and the sweet “plop, plop, plop” of his lunker lure broke the silence of the quiet as he and Lance had accepted the fact that they wouldn’t be getting a check for their efforts today.
Then it happened; that explosion and slurping sound of a bass engulfing his buzz bait and the call for the net. When all the excitement was over with their hearts still racing, a 4.30 largemouth was in the live-well and the race was on to get back to the landing at Canal Bank on time. Their reward for the largest bass caught for the night and so far this year; a payday of $130. Not bad for the “last cast.”

(1st) David Cavell and Garrett Stricker used a Zoom speed craw to entice their 5 bass limit that tipped the scales at 7.76 and their payoff was $402. Plastic baits were the lure of choice for Kevin Cantillo and Cory Brignac (2nd). This choice paid off nicely as they boated a 5 bass limit that weighed 6.86 and $272.
(3rd) Gary Regira and Tony Landry sacked the 3rd 5 bass limit of the night that hit the scales at 6.20 and won $194 for their efforts. (4th) The team of Todd Rabalais and Jody Floyd teamed up for 6.08 and another 5 fish limit totaling $155. (5th)Dustin Welsh and Don Hutchinson caught a limit weighing 5.74 and won $116.
(6th) Tim Morgan and Shane Norwood also brought in 5 bass that weighed 5.66 and took home $91 for their evening’s work. (7th) J R Rodriquez and Darrin Lee landed 4 bass for 5.60 and 2nd place big bass (2.78) and went home with $120 for the evening.
A total of 37 boats took on the challenge and got to experience overcast skies and moving water to bring the best numbers of fish and six 5 bass stringers for the tournament.

Here’s some big news; on the August 6th event all the entry fees will go to paying the top 3 finishers for total weight no matter how many entries they have. If 40 boats enter, $1400 will be paid for the top 3 places by percentage. Not as many places paid out, but much more money to the winners.

Martinez Seafood provided an outstanding pork and sausage pastalaya to feed all those hungry fishermen and of course Canal Bank provided the facilities. Come out and fish with us or just watch the weigh-in. See ya next week!
